Thursday, October 6, 2022
MONTEREY COUNTY – The Transportation Agency for Monterey County (TAMC), in partnership with the Monterey County Health Department, City of Salinas, Salinas City Elementary School District, Alisal Union School District, the Monterey County Office of Education (MCOE), Blue Zones Project Monterey County and Ecology Action launched walking school buses at Kammann Elementary and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Academy this week through the countywide Safe Routes to School Program.
A walking school bus is an adult supervised walking group which provides a safe and healthy way for children to get to school. Led by the Health Department and a rotating cast of popular costumed characters, students, guardians, and other participants, including police officers and staff members from each of the agencies met before school at designated starting points and parade along safe routes to school on the following days:
- October 4th (and every Tuesday in October) – Kammann Elementary School
- October 5th (and every Wednesday in October) – Martin Luther King Jr. Academy
Students who participate in the walking school bus or walk, bicycle, scooter, or skateboard to school during the month of October will be entered into a random drawing to win a new bicycle, scooter, or skateboard.
Ecology Action and the Health Department will host Walking School Bus workshops with each school community to teach others how to continue the walking school bus programming for the remainder of the school year.
