Monterey-Salinas Transit (MST) and the Transportation Agency for Monterey County (TAMC) are hosting an open house where the community can learn about and share feedback on the SURF! Busway and Bus Rapid Transit project that will run parallel to Highway 1 on the underutilized and publicly owned rail corridor between Marina and Sand City/Seaside.

Detailed design has now begun, presenting an exciting opportunity for the public to provide input on specific features of the project and learn how to hop on board the new line when it’s open for service.

SURF! is a Measure X regionally funded project and is part of MST’s larger vision of connecting communities, creating opportunity, and being kind to our planet. SURF! will make it faster and easier to travel from the Salinas Valley to the Monterey Peninsula. Whether riding to get to work, school, medical appointments, shop for groceries, or simply to visit family or friends, the SURF! line will connect our communities. The project also supports and enhances communities along and beyond the corridor – returning an expected $250 million in economic benefits and creating 650 jobs for the region. With over 500,000 fewer vehicle trips every year, a net decrease of more than 1,200 metric tons of greenhouse gases, and new bicycle trail connections and improvements to the Monterey Bay Recreational Trail for SURF! line users and recreationists, the project is great news for our planet too. The SURF! project is an important step toward a modern transit network for the Monterey Peninsula and beyond.

Members of the community are invited to help shape the future of SURF! public transit in Monterey County during the open house on August 31, 2022, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Carpenters Union Hall, 910 2nd Avenue, Marina, CA 93933. Open house attendees can visit different stations to learn how SURF! helps meet MST’s environmental, equity, and economic goals and ties into its larger vision for transit priorities in Monterey County.

Participants can expect to visit tables with information and representatives on subject areas of transit station design, environmental benefits, and local connections (bike, pedestrian, bus service, traffic signal), as well as an opportunity to watch a video simulation of the busway.
