Construction on the First Segment of the Fort Ord Regional Trail and Greenway in Del Rey Oaks Begins This Week

MONTEREY COUNTY – The Transportation Agency for Monterey County (TAMC), Caltrans District 5, the City of Del Rey Oaks, the City of Seaside and the Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District announced that construction on the Canyon Del Rey segment of the “Fort Ord Regional Trail and Greenway (FORTAG)” project will begin on Monday, August 19, 2024.

As utility relocations are wrapping up, construction of the first segment of the trail begins with the moving of equipment and materials behind Safeway, construction surveying and marking of the project areas in Work Memorial Park and Del Rey Park. Work in this area will require access to Work Memorial Park, the Butterfly Garden and tennis courts to be restricted during the construction period.

Subsequent work in the following 2 weeks includes: 

·       Installation of temporary storm water and sediment controls in Work Memorial Park

·       Clearing and removal of vegetation, rocks, and debris in Work Memorial Park

·       Tree protection and removals on Plumas Avenue, Carlton Drive, SR-218 at the Frog Pond, Work Memorial Park, and Del Rey Park

Construction work hours are 7:00 am – 5:00 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. When needed,  work hours in the evening are 9:00 pm to 6:00 am, Sunday through Thursday. The overall construction period is projected to be August 2024 - August 2026.

The Canyon Del Rey segment of the Fort Ord Regional Trail & Greenway (FORTAG) is part of the larger 28-mile effort to connect communities in and around the former Fort Ord to each other and to educational institutions, employment, community, and open space.
